Is it true that laptops and cell phones can cause cancer?
Q. i've heard that laptops and cell phones can cause cancer, but i'm not sure if it was just a rumor. Does anyone know if it's true or not?
A. They don't directly cause cancer. The radiation emitted by laptops and cellular phones (mainly cell phones), can increase your risk for cancer, according to primarily statistical evidence. But you already have to have a good risk factor for cancer, and must be exposed to these things constantly in order for them to have much of an effect.
It's mostly just a rumor, with a little bit of truth behind it. It certainly isn't as serious as what people are making it out to be.

Cell phones and cancer, cell phones don't produce ionized radiation, so how do they trigger cancer?
Q. I was always of the belief that ionizing radiation is the one to keep clear of, yet a TV program tonight (again) is scaremongering that non-ionizing RF i.e cell phones can cause cancer. What mechanisms could be responsible to cause this, or do cell phones literally call up abnormal cells.
A. Your belief was correct that, indeed, it takes very high energy, ionizing radiation on the electromagnetic spectrum to cause the sort of damage we see with x-ray, CT, etc.
The whole thing with the cell phone issue got the media in a frenzy when a prominent physician at Pittsburgh Med. Ctr. issued a memo to employees which basically read that since we don't know the long term risks of cell phones, he urged caution. He cited a few rather obscure articles which were based on data from the really old kind of cell phones which were much higher in energy and no one uses them today. Theoretically, even though those old models from 20 to 30 years back were non-ionizing, they still had the potential to cause harm by heating.
To this day, we don't have a shred of solid evidence linking cells phones to cancer. I think that whenever a well-known physician issues any sort of memo like this, it's gonna raise eyebrows and by the time it gets shuffled through and distorted by the media, it places everyone in an uproar.
Bottom line is that we have studied this very carefully and have yet to find a causal relationship between cell phones we used (which are way lower in energy than those in the obscure sturdies from Sweden) and malignancy.
Despite Dr. Herberman's alarming statement, multiple international, independent and renown organizations including the ACR, WHO all insist that the use of cell phones is safe, period.

Q. i heard that too much radiation from cell phones can give you cancer. especially if a man has his cell phone around his belt all the time. does anyone have any proof or know of any websites about this?
A. Despite extensive studies done the past ten years or more in European countries . . no one has been able to conclusively establish a direct link between cell phone use and cancer. The scare about it from the media comes from the unknown . . no one knows what causes cancer . . and so just about anything anyone can think up becomes the next mass hysteria. Basically, if it bothers you than just change your habits with cell phones . . don't use them . . but no concrete evidence exists to link brain tumors with a cell phone or any other type of cancer.
