Why do people talk on cell phones in public?
Q. Many people find it inconsiderate when others use cell phones, unnecessarily, in public a space. Personally, I prefer to keep my conversations private. I'm really curious to hear from those who don't feel this way and to know why you don't mind having a conversation where anyone around can hear OR why you think it's ok to talk on the phone while interacting with others (e.g., waitress, clerks, etc.). I'm just trying to understand, not criticize.
A. I am like you - I feel uncomfortable with people listening in on my conversations. However, I know alot of people who dont mind others listening in on conversations.
But to answer your question, there are a number of reasons.
1. Somebody calls you first. You have no choice but to answer (since it could be something important)
2. Some people like showing off brand new phones and the only way to not wave it in front of peoples faces - and thus looking ridiculous) is to talk loudly on the phone, hence, flaunting it.
3. Others think that they look cool because talking on the phone makes them look like that they are popular (to appear to have lots of friends that shower them with attention/gossip)
4. It could be urgent news or you agreed to call somebody to notify something.
5. Some people love chatting/socialising, or are easily bored and so they are desperate to communicate with other people.
