Introduction on using cell phones during school?

Q. Prompt: Many schools restrict students from using their cell phones during school hours. Teachers and administrators have concerns that students will use their phones dishonestly or inappropriately. Write a letter to your school principal convincing him or her that students should be allowed to use cell phones during school hours. Use facts and examples to support your position.

A. Some things you can include:

- cell phones can be used in an emergency. (school shootings, another student having medical emergency where staff isnt present)

- Cellphones are more than just a device that makes calls, smart phones allow for quick research instead of using a computer system (you can expand a lot here. Note it saves the school costs in computer maintenance if students are allowed smartphones and use of the Wifi access instead. Information can be accessed quicker instead of a school computer having to be booted, etc. encourages independant research rather than reliance on study material provided by teacher.)

- Emergency notices can be sent via text (You can also expand here: emergency closings, over due library book notices, )

- Use during lunch break to relieve stress.

- SMS service provided by school (notices of important school dates or availibility of school report cards, notices from school clubs for upcoming events, pep rally notifications to boost attendance, school sport notices/scores to boost game attendance, school function notifications etc.

Should students being allowed to use cell phones during school hours?
Q. I chose no. for my persuasive essay my reasons so far is that it would be disruptive and cause students not to focus and concentrate, and cause cheating...what other reasons should students not be allowed to use cell phones during school hours?

A. It can be really disruptive, but it can also be helpful. It's really interesting seeing cellphone and personal computer use at my university. Lots of times people pull out their phones and go online to answer questions the teacher cannot. Multimedia use in classrooms is rapidly becoming a serious educational tool. Basically anybody who was born after the mid-eighties uses hyper attention as opposed to deep concentration. We are able to focus on more things at once than our education system has evolved to allow us. We can multitask much more than we used to be able to do, which is why you see kids so bored in school when they are being forced to focus on one thing yammering on at the front of the class. It's true I think that in elementary and high school cell phones are normally disruptive to the class and not being used for educational purposes, but I see a huge change in the university setting. One of my professors set up a twitter feed so that we could communicate with each other without necessarily interrupting the flow of the class. That way were were able to comment, joke around, and have questions answered without disrupting the lecture. It was very interesting. It wasn't used very much by most of the class, but I predict that there will be much more of this type of thing going on in classrooms in the future.

Should kids be allowed to use cell phones at school?
Q. I have to write a persuasive essay. And I need 3 good reasons why kids shouldn't be allowed to use cell phones in school.

A. I would say yes, for contacting a parent if needed, but they should leave it in a backpack.

3 reasons why not though

1. it can distract other students

2. it can get out of hand and students can text in class

3.It can get lost, damaged, broken, or stolen
