Can a cell phone company automatically extend a cell phone contract?
Q. My mom had a 1 year cell phone contract with Verizon Wireless. After one year she did not renew or cancel her contract. Verizon automatically extended her contract for one more year. She wants to cancel it now but has until May 2011 for her contract to end (since Verizon extended it to that time). Is this legal? Can she get out of it? Thanks :)

A. You would have to read the original contract. Some phone companies have automatic contract renewal if you do not tell them not to renew. Usually they will send a notice with your bill when the contract is about to end, but not always. That is why it is important to read everything in contracts before you sign.

Does a cell phone contract appear on your credit?
Q. I have been told yes and no to this question. Why isn't a cell phone contract included in the credit report?

A. Credit reports include only (1) things related to you borrowing money [loans, credit cards, etc.] and (2) things related to you failing to pay money you owe. Because obtaining a cell phone contract is not borrowing, it does not appear on your credit report if you do pay. However, if you do not pay, that does appear on your credit report. This is why you were given different answers.
